Dear Somalilanders,

I am delighted to share with you the remarkable celebration that took place today, May 18th, 2023, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. It was an event of great significance organized by the Somaliland Strategic Advisory Group in collaboration with the Somaliland communities from New York, Georgia, Texas, Washington State, and Connecticut. This commemoration marked the National Day of Somaliland, and it was hosted in the heart of American democracy, the United States Congress.

May 18th holds immense importance for the people of Somaliland as it signifies the anniversary of their declaration of independence from Somalia in 1991. This year’s celebration was particularly exceptional, as it united Somalilanders from various states across the United States, reflecting the strong bonds of the diaspora community.

The event commenced with a formal session held within the grand halls of the Capitol, where members of Congress, diplomats, community leaders, and esteemed guests were present alongside the Somaliland delegation.

The discussions centered on the enduring partnership between the United States and Somaliland, emphasizing shared values such as democracy, liberty, and human rights. Congress members expressed their support for Somaliland’s aspirations for international recognition and lauded the Somaliland community for their notable contributions to American society, economy, and culture.

The event culminated in a reception, providing an informal platform for networking, dialogue, and the establishment of stronger ties between the Somaliland community, congressional representatives, and other influential figures. Participants engaged in discussions regarding future collaborations, educational opportunities, and investments that could mutually benefit Somaliland and the United States.

The celebration of May 18th on Capitol Hill, organized by the Somaliland Strategic Advisory Group and supported by the Somaliland communities from New York, Georgia, Texas, Washington State, and Connecticut, signifies the unity and determination of the Somaliland diaspora in promoting their cause within the United States.
