Somaliland wins first ever International football match

swedish_somalilandThe Somaliland national team played and won its first ever international Footbal match Saturday, beating a pick-up team of local Swedish players to 1-0 in the small town of Vrigstad in Småland in southern Sweden.

Somaliland is declared independence from Somalia in May 1991. Its independence is unrecognized by any country, but unlike troubled Somalia, Somaliland is often seen as a peaceful oasis of democracy in the region.

swedishAmong those there for the match was former Somaliland Foreign Minister Edna Adan, one of those fighting for international recognition of the country.

“Twenty-five years ago we separated from Somalia,” she told Swedish Radio News. “And since then we have promoted peace and democracy, so that refugees will have someplace to return to.”
