Somaliland president travels to United States to boost bilateral ties

A High-level delegation led by the President of the Republic of Somaliland Hon. Muse Bihi Abdi has today departed for his first visit to the United States.

The president, along with members of his cabinet and business tycoons, has departed at Egal International Airport on Saturday Afternoon.

The members of the President’s delegation include the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation  Dr. Isse Kayd Mohamud, the Minister of Interior Mohamed Kahin Ahmed, the Minister of Information, Culture and Public Awareness Saleban Ali Koore, the Minister of Trade Mohamud Hassan Sa’ad, and Minister of Environment Shukri Haji Ismail Bandare, the longest-serving environment minister holding her position for the last 12 years.

The president’s delegation also includes Dahabshiil Group Chief Mohamed Said Duale, Somcable and MSG CEO Mohamed Said Gedi, Telesom Group CEO Abdikarim Mohamed Eid, and Abdinasir Adan Nur who is among Telesom’s Board of Directors, and also Dr. Jama Muse Jama, director of Hargeisa Cultural Center.

During his visit to Washington, president Bihi is expected to meet a number of United States government officials, members of Congress, and also US policymakers. These include United States’ Defence Secretary Lloyd James Austin and other Pentagon officials.

Sources close to the government confirmed that during their meeting, Somaliland president and secretary Lloyd James will discuss the mutual interest of both countries concerning regional stability and security collaboration between Somaliland and the United States.

Besides, President Muse Bihi will give his official policy speech at The Heritage Foundation on 14th March, 2022 and he is expected to address issues about Closer US-Somaliland ties, Somaliland’s guest for Recognition, its vital geographical location, and investment opportunities for the US companies.

President Muse Bihi Abdi, the 5th president of Somaliland, will be the fourth president to visit the United States during their time in office. The last head of state who visited Washington DC was the former Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo on 22 April 2013, three years after his election in 2010.

This will be president Bihi’s first visit to the United States since his 2017 election, building on last November’s visit to the US by Somaliland Foreign Minister Dr. Essa Kay and Dr. Edna Aden Ismail, the president’s special envoy for Somaliland/Somalia talks.
